Election '99: San Antonio Votes Yes for Spurs' Arena
Despite low team contribution, voters give strong show of support
San Antonio, November 5, 1999 -- Voters approved increases in local hotel and car rental taxes to fund $146.5 million of a $175 million arena for the Spurs by a vote of 61 to 39 percent. The Spurs will contribute $28.5 million toward the $175 million facility. The Spurs will also cover any construction overruns and operational losses.
The San Antonio Express-News noted that spending by the pro-arena advocates was near $4 million.
