Padres' Ballpark Construction Resumes
Court rules that contracts by City Council are lawful
San Diego, July 1, 2001 -- Allowing "for ballpark construction to resume as soon as October," a California Superior Court Judge ruled that the San Diego City Council acted lawfully when it readopted ballpark contracts for the Padres' new facility. in The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the deals a "decisive blow to ballpark opponents," and is "regarded as one of the most important events in the long-stalled $1 billion downtown redevelopment project."
Judge Judith McConnell concluded that the council's action removed any "taint" from the previous involvement of former City Council member Valerie Stallings and Padres Owner John Moores. Stallings was forced to resign this past January and pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges stemming from her failure to report gifts from Moores.
The article noted that this court's ruling bascially precludes future challenges based on the validity of those contracts and any conflict of interest as to Ms. Stallings.
