Rap Star Losing Sports Clients

Master P's 'No Limit Sports' criticized for Ricky Williams' deal

New York, January 14, 2000 -- Athletes are leaving No Limit Sports, the sports agency founded by rapper Percy "Master P" Miller. Denver Nuggets forward Ron Mercer, and Charlotte Hornets second-year guard Ricky Davis announced that he will be leaving No Limit and further stated that all of the firm's NBA clients may be following suit. No Limit also represents the Clippers' Derek Anderson, Portland's' Bonzi Wells, Washington's Larron Profit and Atlanta's Jason Terry.

Mercer would not specify why he left No Limit. However, Charlotte's Ricky Davis said that Master P's continuing quest to play basketball himself (his tryouts with the Hornets and Toronto Raptors and his games in the Continental Basketball Association and the International Basketball League) had been a factor for his leaving No Limit. Davis feels that Master P simply stopped concentrating on the business.

In addition to Master P's relentless pursuit of the game, the disastrous, incentive-laden contract No Limit negotiated for New Orleans Saints running back Ricky Williams may have also caused the abandonment by the NBA players.

Master P's problems are happening at a difficult time for sports agents. The sale and consolidation of sports agencies, coupled with the limitation of fees which can be earned through contract negotiations (3 or 4 percent, depending on the sport) and cutbacks in the endorsement market are some of the reasons.  The last reason is particularly important because agents can charge more for their work negotiating endorsements than salaries.
